ABSTRACT

History A 32-year-old woman presents to A&E with abdominal pain, bloody diarrhoea and fever. She reports having had cramping abdominal pain, watery diarrhoea and nausea 2 weeks previously. She had visited the GP after 3 days who took stool samples and prescribed imodium, buscopan and dioralyte. The diarrhoea continued and she now has 8-10 bowel movements per day. She has not consumed food or fluids in over 24 hours. She was previously well, has not travelled abroad recently, has not been in contact with anyone who was sick and was not aware of any family history of illness. She is an ex-smoker of 5 pack-years. She has no drug allergies. She works for a theatre company.
