ABSTRACT

The twin pillars of fuel quality and engine technology play a vital role in the improved performance and emission reduction of an internal combustion engine. The upgradation of fuel quality continues periodically throughout the world for meeting stringent emission norms as well as high fuel economy for the benefit of the consumer. The alternative fuel or formulated fuel would be characterised mainly by the following four methods:

• Fuel quality study • Test bench experimental study on an internal combustion engine • Chassis dynamometer study on an automotive vehicle • Field trial study on an automotive vehicle

The development of fuel quality and engine technology primarily involves these four studies for meeting the stringent emission norms and assessing the potential of a new or alternative fuel. The importance of each study is explained in the upcoming sections.
