ABSTRACT

Air mode is the fastest transportation link as compared to other modes such as land and sea. However, it is too expensive.

It is generally used for the following purposes:

• Emergency services: Medicine, medical treatment, rescue operation during natural calamities such as earthquake, flooding and tsunami

• Personal transportation, including tourism • Spare parts for important lightweight machinery/system, time-

bounded validity of certain medicines and chemicals as they need to be used before the expiry date

• Social status

Air-mode transportation can be classified broadly into two categories as short-distance and long-distance travels:

1. Short-distance travel: Internal combustion engine-coupled helicopter. The helicopter is used for personal transportation for a single person

or a small group of persons for shorter distance travel, especially where there is no availability of road such as forest area or sea. It is widely used for rescue operations in situations such as a natural calamity, tsunami and fire hazardous situations.
