ABSTRACT

Over the years, many researchers have studied Six Sigma programs and identified many critical decisions of these programs (Chakravorty, 2009). Shah and Ward (2003) examined the relationship between contextual factors and extent of

1 INTRODUCTION

For the complexity of the ship building, harmful impacts are occurred as a result of different processes, including all solid, liquid and gaseous forms of emissions and discharges. The effect of shipyard on environment and human health can be reduced with technological improvements on shipbuilding industries. New production and innovative technologies to reduce the pollution may be the key to decrease the material inputs, to improve the engineering processes to reuse the materials, to improve the management practices and to use alternative materials to replace toxic chemicals. The six sigma method is a project-driven management approach to improve the organization’s products, services, and processes by continually reducing defects in the organization. It is a business strategy that focuses on improving customer requirements understanding, business systems, productivity, and financial performance. Lean manufacturing is an approach that aims to initialize the unnecessary consumptions. Lean manufacturing combines the labor-intensive production and serial production. It aims to increase the production speed and thus, decrease the production time to improve quality, cost and delivery performance at the same time. Total Quality Method, Lean Organization and Process Improvement, Kaizen, Production-Demand Balancing and Human Resources Systems are the methods of Lean Manufacturing.
