ABSTRACT

Vaginal cancer accounts for 1-2% of gynaecological malignancies. Most vaginal carcinomas are secondary, especially of the cervix, endometrium, colon or rectum. Up to 30% of primary vaginal cancers occur in patients with a history of pre-invasive or invasive cervical cancer. Vaginal intraepithelial neoplasia (VAIN) is a precursor, but its malignant potential is unknown. Nine percent of primary vaginal malignancies are adenocarcinomas and may be related to exposure to diethylstilbestrol in utero.
