ABSTRACT

Acute abdominal pain is one of the commonest gynaecological presentations and has a myriad of causes. Gynaecological, surgical and medical causes may need to be considered. Age is an important factor in considering the likely diagnosis. The nongynaecological causes which should be considered here are similar to those described in the chapter on alternative causes of acute abdominal pain in early pregnancy. However, a few additional causes become relevant in the postmenopausal population. In this chapter the gynaecological causes of acute abdominal pain will be brought together and an action plan for management discussed.
