ABSTRACT

Compressed gases DOT Hazard Class 2 is composed of gases that are under pressure. They may be entirely in the gaseous state in the case of compressed gases or they may be liquefied gases such as propane and other liquefied petroleum gases (LPGs). The primary hazard is the pressure, which can cause violent container failure when an accident occurs. If the gas is flammable, poisonous, or causes asphyxiation, the hazard is compounded. Liquefied gas pressure containers can be dangerous under accident conditions; ambient temperature changes, flame impingement, and damage to containers can cause boiling liquid expanding vapor explosions (BLEVEs).
