During the battle of Waterloo, Napoleon Bonaparte was concentrating on the task of breaking the line of British and Allied infantry regiments, which blocked his route to Brussels. In the midst of the engagement, an aide drew Napoleon’s attention to a column of troops that were approaching their right flank from some distance away. After a quick look through his telescope, the emperor made a snap judgment that these were a detachment under Marshal Grouchy, rushing to link up with him. No action was taken as a result.
