ABSTRACT

TAKING A ‘HIP HISTORY’ (A BRIEF REMINDER OF HOW TO TAKE A MUSCULOSKELETAL HISTORY)

A systematic approach ●● Presenting complaint – remember ‘hip pain is groin pain’ ●● Hip pathology can present with knee pain, especially in children, beware! ●● History of presenting complaint ●● SOCRATES (site, onset, character, radiation, associated ndings, timing,

exacerbating/relieving factors, severity) ●● Impact of problem (social, domestic, work) ●● Past medical history ●● Family history, including congenital hip problems ●● Drug history ●● Social history (including occupation)

●● Systems enquiry: note that knee pain can be the only complaint of hip pathology and could be missed if you are not thorough.
