ABSTRACT

Apoptosis is an evolutionary conserved process that maintains a subtle balance between progression and cell death. Apoptosis is tightly regulated by various molecular factors in normal cells. Dysregulation of apoptosis is associated with diseases like liver failure, stroke, heart attack, cancer, etc. Cancer cells survive and thrive in the body by adapting various survival mechanisms, by which they make the cellular environment conducive for their growth. Evasion of apoptosis is one of the common hallmarks of human cancers (Hanahan and Weinberg, 2000). Killing of cancerous cells is the endpoint of various therapeutic interventions for cancer, and such cell killing invariably converges into the apoptotic pathway. Therefore, dysregulation of apoptosis is also responsible for chemoresistance.
