ABSTRACT

Hepialus humuli (Linnaeus) (401-403) Ghost swift moth A frequent pest of grassland and other crops, including raspberry, strawberry and hop. Widely distributed in central and northern Europe.

DESCRIPTION Adult female: 50-70 mm wingspan; forewings greyish ochreous, with a pinkish tinge at the apex. Adult male: 46-50 mm wingspan; wings silvery white; body yellowish brown. Egg: 0.7 × 0.5 mm; white when laid, soon becoming shiny black. Larva: up to 50mm long; body whitish and more or less opaque; pinacula reddish brown; head and prothoracic plate reddish brown. Pupa: 30-45 mm long; dark brown; abdomen with several transverse series of dorsal spines.
