ABSTRACT
The recycling question in concrete technology comes up in various aspects:
• Recycling of concrete • Recycling of other materials as aggregate in concrete • Recycling of other materials as reinforcement in concrete • Recycling of other materials as binders in concrete • Recycling of cement kiln dust
Later in this chapter we cite R.N. Swamy, who claims that awareness is one of the most important driving forces in the recycling of concrete. We firmly believe that just awareness of the sustainability issues in general, and emission challenges and recycling in particular, has been a very important inspiration to the present vitalisation we experience in concrete technology development. Awareness has inspired concrete technologists worldwide to try out new possibilities and solutions that have not been seen before, or have been forgotten in the modern industrial goal to streamline the concrete industry and material based on a too narrow line of material thinking and technology. The recycling possibilities and initiatives are too many to give the topic full attention in a single chapter. We have only tried to give a glimpse into the alternatives and the wide geographical spread in the ongoing development.
