ABSTRACT

ROUTES OF ADMINISTRATION TOPICAL Topical administration is the usual route associated with ophthalmic drugs. Some of the many factors to consider when selecting a drug for topical therapy are: what is the target tissue and can the drug reach the targeted tissue in therapeutic levels; is the drug available in ophthalmic form; what form of topical drug to use if it is available in more than one form; what is the desired frequency of administration and practicality of it being administered; owner compliance; patient cooperation; comparative cost of medications; and potential side-effects and toxicities.
