ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION There are relatively few true emergencies in ophthal - mology where delaying treatment for a few minutes or hours will change the outcome of the disesase but there are many that require timely therapy. Table 4.1 lists the usual ocular emergencies. The veterinarian is often asked to respond to ocular conditions that are either dramatic and/or alarming to the owner but rather benign as far as visual function is concerned. A good philosophy, when in doubt, is to see nonemergencies rather than risk turning away an emergency.
