ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION The emphasis in this chapter will be on the preparation, instrumentation, principles of surgery, and postoperative care of patients for ophthalmic surgery of the adnexa and cornea. Because of the investment in equipment and the uniqueness of the surgery, intraocular surgery should be delegated to those individuals who perform it on a regular basis. Nevertheless, extraocular surgery is still the most delicate surgery that will be performed by the general practitioner. A knowledge of the anatomy involved and the acquisition of a few specialized instruments will greatly facilitate performing extraocular surgery. The individual surgical procedures are discussed in detail in the appropriate chapters.
