ABSTRACT
Phosphorites are generally divided into three main groups (Table 9.1): bedded and nodular phosphorites, usually of marine origin and formed in association with high organic productivity; bioclastic lag phosphorites (bone beds); and guano (bird or bat excrement) and its associated facies. Guano is not known from the ancient geological record and is not discussed further here.
