ABSTRACT

National Research Council’s recommended cal cium content resulted in mild hypercalcemia with concom itant hypo phospha temia. Intestinal calcium absorption occurs by both transcellular and paracellular pathways. The transcellular pathway involves an active transport mechanism for calcium through the cell and ejection by an ATP-ase dependent calcium-pump from the basal membrane into the circulatory system. Passive calcium absorption occurs via the paracellular pathway, especially under conditions of high intraluminal calcium concentration. Intestinal excretion of calcium is independent of dietary calcium content and plays a minor role in corporeal calcium kinetics.
