ABSTRACT

87 An ulcerating lesion of approximately two years duration on the back of a four-yearold Doberman Pinscher is shown (87). Many unsuccessful attempts were made to close this defect and biopsies were taken to rule out neoplasia. The lesions originally extended down both flanks and the present size is the result of wound contraction. Scar tissue is palpated extending into the flanks and the skin surrounding the lesion is extremely tight. i. What reconstructive procedures can be considered to correct this abnormality? ii. After alternatives are considered, a decision is made to use a tissue expander. What is the physiologic mechanism by which this device provides sufficient skin to cover a defect?
