ABSTRACT

Type 1 diabetes is the result of severe insulin deficiency leading to insulin-dependent diabetes. It is one of the most common chronic diseases of childhood.

Highest incidence rates of type 1A (autoimmune) diabetes are in Finland and the island of Sardinia. The frequency of type 1A diabetes in Europe is comparatively high compared with the rest of the world, higher in temperate zones and developed countries, correlating with gross national product as an index of wealth.
