ABSTRACT

The goals of diabetes management are, at first glance, easily established. We know that the excess mortality associated with diabetes is due to macrovascular disease. The morbidity due to diabetes results from both macrovascular and microvascular disease. The aim of therapy is to normalize excess mortality and morbidity, so therapy should be aimed at risk factors for both macrovascular and microvascular diseases. Modifiable risk factors for macrovascular

disease are hypertension, hypercholesterolemia, obesity, smoking, and hyperglycemia.
