ABSTRACT

Interparticle forces acting among colloidal particles suspended in a liquid medium determine the physical behavior of dispersions. Colloidal stability, rheology, electrokinetic phenomena, and sedimentation are all affected by the nature and extent of such forces. Interparticle interactions determine the physical behavior of paints, foods, pharmaceuticals, adhesives, printing inks, cosmetics, detergents, ceramics, and many other systems of industrial relevance. However, a comprehensive quantitative understanding of the observed behavior of all colloidal systems is at present hardly obtainable.
