DEFLECTION AND CRACKING In normal design practice, reinforced concrete structures are designed for the ultimate limit state. As explained in Chapter 6, the serviceability limit state criteria such as maximum deflection, maximum crack widths are not checked by detailed calculations but by meeting deemed-to-satisfy rules such as

(a) Ensure satisfy deflection criteria at serviceability limit state by using minimum ratios of span to depth given in Table 7.4N and equations (7.16a) and (7.16b) of Eurocode 2.
