ABSTRACT

In this chapter and the next, we shall be focusing on the systems of reduced dimensionality. The dimensionality of a system plays an important role in determining its electronic properties. For example, we saw in Chapter 2 how strongly the density of states (DOS) changes by changing the dimensionality. In this chapter, we shall discuss atomic clusters and nanowires, which can be considered systems with zero and one dimensionality, respectively. In the next chapter, we shall discuss two-dimensional systems such as surfaces and interfaces.
