ABSTRACT
For reasons described in the Introduction, the foundations of control theory were laid down in terms of sinusoidal signals. A sinusoidal input is applied to the system and all the information contained in the initial transient is ignored until the output has settled down to another sinusoid. Everything is deduced from the “gain,” the ratio of output amplitude to input, and “phase shift” of the system.
