ABSTRACT

The terms neurotization, nerve transfer, and nerve crossover have been used interchangeably. During a neurotization procedure, a healthy donor nerve is divided and its proximal stump is coapted directly or via a nerve graft to the distal stump of an injured non-functioning nerve. The transferred nerve eventually assumes new end-organ specificity. The sacrificed donor nerve must be expendable. The function gained with the transfer must be of greater value than the function lost.
