ABSTRACT

Plant-derived compounds (phytochemicals) are being studied as chemopreventive and anticancer agents (Surh 2003). This trend is driven by the huge cost to develop anticancer drugs and the low probability that drugs are either approved or remain on the market because of a lack of efcacy or unexpected toxicity. Population studies support the idea that a diet rich in phytochemicals can have a dramatic effect on health and carcinogenesis (Scalbert et al. 2005). Preclinical studies have demonstrated that natural products can inhibit all stages of cancer progression (Gupta et al. 2010).
