ABSTRACT

What happens to the leadership theories studied throughout the 20th century in the new virtual and global business environment? For example, how can the virtual project manager lead using management by walking around (MBWA) in a modern organization? Peters and Waterman [1] popularized MBWA back in 1982. This management approach encourages leaders to get out from behind their desks and go watch the employees work, to walk the halls and visit other offices, or stop to “catch up” at the water cooler. By doing this, the manager can observe who is working well and who is not and react to employees’ positive or negative behaviors with actions, body language, and face-to-face conversation. MBWA managers are also able to show that this is their management style and expect others to model it.
