Stress Response in Fish book
Stress is the nonspecifi c response of the organism to any demand made upon it (Selye, 1973). According to Selye (1984) stress should be divided into two phases: “eustress” or the healthy stress and “distress” or the bad stress. Eustress occurs as a response of the organism undergoing situations that provoke physiological changes that optimize its biological performance and defense mechanisms. Distress occurs when certain factors promote physiological changes in an organism that may compromise the organism’s integrity. Major part of stress research is focused on distress phase (MartinezPorchas et al., 2009).
