ABSTRACT

This chapter describes fluorescent lamp (LFL) since this lamp category generates a substantial portion of the consumer lighting industry’s revenue; and presents an improved design for an light-emitting diode (LED) tubular replacement lamp using the novel concept. Both compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs) and LEDs stand out as creditable lighting solutions for many ambient and household applications. It is therefore meaningful to compare CFLs and LEDs as replacement options for the Edison lamp. Philips and Sylvania LED retail lamps are among the primary options for the 60 W incandescent lamp, both of which have fairly similar performance ratings. Many manufacturers in the LED lighting industry see an opportunity in producing LED replacement lamps for LFLs with the outlook of capturing a significant portion of the gigantic market. Many LED-based replacement lamps for tubular fluorescent lamps place discrete surface-mount technology LEDs directly on a cylindrical base; this produces wasteful, and directional illumination that is unsuitable for large-space and high-ceiling applications.
