ABSTRACT

Since the 1940s, with the advent of the electronic computing machine, computers have progressed a great deal with the mainframes of the 1950s to the cloud of the 2000s. is chapter provides an overview of the evolution of computing systems. In Section 2.2, we discuss mainframe computing, mini-computers, and the personal computers. In Section 2.3, we discuss distributed computing including distributed object management. In Section 2.4, we discuss the emergence of the web and in Section 2.5, we discuss the emergence of the cloud. is chapter is summarized in Section 2.6. Figure 2.1 illustrates this evolution.
