ABSTRACT

Introduction Hazard control personnel must know about the many governmental agencies involved in promoting and regulating the various aspects of safety and health. Agencies such as Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC), Food and Drug Administration (FDA), and Department of Transportation (DOT) publish standards and hold enforcement powers. Other federal agencies such as the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) do not enforce standards but provide guidance, publications, and information relevant to hazard control-related topics. Hazard control personnel should also understand the role that voluntary or consensus standards organizations make in supporting eective hazard control practice. Finally, hazard control personnel should understand the professional opportunities that membership groups and professional associations provide.
