ABSTRACT

The detection of crash conditions, and the determination of whether and when an airbag deployment signal should be given, is a process that continues to grow in complexity as more and more “what if” conditions are considered. Thus digital electronics, with its inherent flexibility, has come to predominate in airbag control units, along with the replacement of mechanical sensors with electrical ones. The analysis of frequency content in the acceleration signals generated by crash sensors is an important element in the reliable detection of crash conditions and the accurate prediction of ultimate crash severities.
