Internet traffic demand has been growing at a rate of 40%–60% per annum for the past few years, forcing operators to upgrade their networks to handle these new capacity requirements. A network upgrade usually implies additional economic efforts resulting from the need for new infrastructure deployments, increased labor costs, and higher electrical power consumption. In this context, telecom operators are burdened with cost optimization as a means to maintain the difficult balance between high-performance services and limited revenues. A reduction of capital expenditures (CAPEX) and operational expenditures (OPEX) is key to achieving this target. Process automation, network data mining, control plane-driven architectures, and many other functionalities are being increasingly deployed for this purpose. Power consumption has recently become a critical budget item because of its growth in volume and cost. Moreover, environmental issues are gaining an everincreasing relevance as well and receive special attention in the telecom operators’ policies.
