ABSTRACT

Soils develop from the weathering of rock or in unconsolidated deposits, such as stream deposits or sand dunes, that are called regolith (defined in the Glossary). That part of the regolith in which a soil develops is called its parent material. It can be disintegrated rock, volcanic ejecta, or organic detritus. Organic soils, which have parent materials of organic detritus, are defined in Chapter 6 and characterized in Chapter 10.
