ABSTRACT

One of the earliest events in the evolution of both the Internet and the web was the development of prototypes. The prototype of the Internet started as four nodes, interconnected by preexisting telephone lines [Leiner et al. 1997]. Similarly, the web began as a prototype that was built by Berners-Lee [ Berners-Lee et al. 1996]. The histories of the Internet and the web, outlined in Chapters 3 and 4, show that the prototypes served as seeds that grew into the two global infrastructures.
