ABSTRACT

Businessmodels for integrated circuit (IC) andmicroelectromechan-

ical systems (MEMS) manufacture can be divided into in-house and

foundry operations. Companies operating the in-house model have

both design and manufacturing capabilities and produce their own

products (e.g., Intel, Samsung, STMicroelectronics, Bosch). A foundry

offers a manufacturing service to other companies, using state-of-

the-art technology nodes in the case of IC foundries and a variety

of different technologies in the case of MEMS foundries (e.g., bulk

or surface microengineering). Foundries offering a manufacturing

service only are known as ‘pure play’. Companies without their own

manufacturing capability are known as ‘fabless’.
