ABSTRACT

An adjuvant is an agent that stimulates the immune system and increases the response to a vaccine, without having any specic antigenic effect in it. An immunologic adjuvant is dened as any substance that acts to accelerate, prolong, or enhance antigen-specic immune responses when used in combination with specic vaccine antigens. The presence of an adjuvant in the vaccine can greatly stimulate the immune response to the antigen by activating dendritic cells (DCs), lymphocytes, and macrophage. Advantages of adjuvants are that the enhancement of the immunogenicity of antigen amount for a successful immunization and reduction of the frequency of booster immunization needed.
