ABSTRACT

The ergot alkaloids are a complex family of mycotoxins derived from prenylated tryptophan in several species of fungi. They are well known for their historical role in human toxicoses. The ergot alkaloids have a high biological activity and a broad spectrum of pharmacological effects; hence, they are of considerable importance to medicine. They have adrenoblocking, antiserotonin, and dopaminomimetic properties. Ergot alkaloids have a therapeutic effect on some forms of migraine, postpartum hemorrhages, and mastopathy, and a sedative effect on the central nervous system. Several semisynthetic compounds based on ergotamine such as lisuride, methysergide, and nicergoline have been used in medicine.
