ABSTRACT

IN THIS CHAPTER Roots cause many collection system stoppages. Roots obstruct flow and fil

ter out grease and sludge from the wastewater. Detecting roots, understanding how and where roots grow, and factors affecting root intrusion are explained in this chapter. A root rating and evaluating system using closed-circuit TV is presented. Removing roots is an important and ongoing maintenance depart ment task. Identifying the worst roots enables agencies to focus their root con trol efforts.
