Nuclear reactors provide a unique energy source that is a combination of renewable and nonrenewable energy, and produces CO2 emissionsfree power. In the near term, the dependence upon uranium ore makes it nonrenewable, even though a large amount of uranium ore is available. However, technology exists so that the fission process can be based on using breeder reactors that generate more fissionable material as a byproduct. Also, there are very large quantities of spent fuel rods that can be converted into fuel. So nuclear reactors have the capability of being a sustainable, carbon-free source of energy.
