ABSTRACT
Sustainable development is an extension of sustainability and has a long history. It is the most common use of the term sustainable and the most confusing. In some respects it is a stand-alone concept and much broader than the definitions outlined previously. The phrase is actually an oxymoron since the two words conflict in meaning. This chapter discusses the background of the sustainable development term and the current usage.
