ABSTRACT

The orbit is a region of confluence for many surgical specialties. This is both an advantage and disadvantage to the unsuspecting patient. Surgeons may have a tendency to exceed the limits of their expertise as they delve from their area of expertise, i.e. sinus, mouth, brain or eyelid, into the orbit. These transgressions may cause anxiety for the surgeon and significant loss of visual function for the unsuspecting patient. Experienced orbital surgeons have developed great respect for potential complications

and techniques to minimize potential loss of visual function. The occasional orbital surgeon often represents trouble waiting to happen.
