ABSTRACT

The history of wind energy in the region dates back several centuries, when the force of wind was used for pumping water and grinding grains. Evidence of this can be found on the Iberian Peninsula as well as in Morocco through centuries of common history. Introduced by French colonial farmers in the earlier part of the 20th century, using wind to pump water from wells through wind pumps became a familiar part of the Moroccan rural landscape. The application of wind energy for the production of electricity, however, was not really considered until the late 1980s.
