ABSTRACT
How are genetic traits passed on from parent to offspring? In very simple terms, genes are the instruction book for building an organism by specifying what proteins to use and, equally important, when to use them. The genetic instruction for a trait is called the genotype. The physical expression of a gene is called the phenotype. Just as phenotypes vary, so do genotypes.
