ABSTRACT

In this chapter the basic tenets surrounding the issue of the abuse of authority and power are examined. The frame within which this chapter should be considered is an extension of the previous chapter’s description of the “spoils of management.” The abuse of authority and power within criminal justice agencies can take place in many different forms. The abuse may take place within criminal justice agencies in the form of unethical managers abusing subordinates. It may also take place between criminal justice officials and members of the public. Regardless of the circumstance, the abuse of authority is a process that is extremely damaging to whoever finds themselves on the receiving end of this wrath.
