ABSTRACT

The purpose of this chapter is to introduce readers to the present state of ethics within the criminal justice system. The information in this chapter is important because it provides the foundation for several of the chapters that follow. In essence, we discuss two major conflicts. The first conflict is between the social order and the moral model. The social order describes the process of all citizens giving up certain liberties to receive certain benefits. The moral order is a concept that describes such principles as humanity, fairness, equality, and equitableness (Wuthnow, 1989).
