ABSTRACT

Introduction In this chapter, we focus on measurement and targets. It is our goal to take the customer product objectives that were identified from our analysis of customer comments in the previous chapter, and (1) find ways to measure how well any product can satisfy those objectives, (2) find ways to measure how important these different product objectives are to potential customers, and (3) set technical performance targets for our own design concept that will make our design better at satisfying those product objectives than any of the competing products. You can appreciate that going from vague product objectives, stated in English, to detailed performance specifications, specified in engineering terms, is a valuable skill. This chapter offers a road map for acquiring that skill.
