ABSTRACT

The seventh Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI) Leadership Leverage Point is to build improvement capacity.1 A health care delivery organization must be technically capable of making, sustaining, and spreading improvements, and this technical capability depends partly on the infrastructure dedicated to quality improvement efforts. BHCS leaders recognized early in the quality journey that delivery of STEEEP care requires robust structural support within the organization.2 In light of this imperative, they began to develop the infrastructure required to help the organization realize its vision to be “trusted as the best place to give and receive safe, quality, compassionate health care.”3 Through a variety of teams, councils, committees, and departments, BHCS has aligned its goals and activities with national priorities articulated by organizations, such as the Institute of Medicine2,4 and the National Quality Forum.5 BHCS has also brought its diverse hospitals and facilities together in service of its mission to “serve all people through exemplary health care, education, research, and community service.” This chapter provides examples of important structural elements that have facilitated STEEEP care throughout BHCS.
