ABSTRACT

Physician leadership is essential for health care organizations to adapt and excel in a continually evolving health care environment. Recognizing this, the Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI) identified physician engagement as one of its Seven Leadership Leverage Points.1 The combination of medical expertise and leadership ability enables physician champions to improve health care organizations’ capacity to address many of the challenges they face, particularly the need to improve access, affordability, and quality of health care.2,3

This chapter discusses the alignment and training of physician leaders as well as the ways in which they have been integral to success at BHCS, and the role they will continue to play as the organization addresses the challenges that lie ahead.
