ABSTRACT

Nearly 80 percent of all Americans experience a critical illness or injury in their lifetime, either as the patient, family member, or friend of a patient.1 The intensive care unit (ICU), where critical care is often delivered, saves lives, but also faces challenges to providing patients with the best possible care including a high risk of infection and other medical complications. In these “high stakes” environments, even a seemingly small quality improvement measure can mean the difference between life and death. The BHCS Critical Care Service Line is committed to the continued advancement of critical care practice, implementing standardized, evidence-based practices supported by continuous cycles of research and quality improvement initiatives to achieve STEEEP care.
